Become a Foster Family

Fostering for a shelter is an essential temporary solution for animal welfare. Unlike adoption, it is a short or medium-term commitment where you open your home to a dog while they wait to find their "forever family."

Here are the key points to understand this role:

1.Why we choose to place our dogs in foster care:

  • Vulnerable dogs: Puppies that are too young, senior dogs, or those recovering from surgery.
  • Rehabilitation: Shy dogs or those who have experienced trauma and need to regain trust in humans in a calm environment.
  • Space management: Allowing the shelter to save an additional animal when the kennels are full.

2. The Role of the Family

  • Your mission is to provide a safe environment and prepare the dog for their future life:
  • Socialization: Getting the dog used to household noises (vacuum, TV), other animals, or children.
  • Basic Training: Working on housebreaking, leash walking, or simple commands.
  • Observation: You are the eyes of the shelter. You help define the dog’s personality, which allows us to find compatible adopters.

3. Logistics and Operations

Rosie Animal Adoption remains the legal owner of the animal.

  • Medical Expenses: These are almost always covered by the shelter (veterinary care, medication).
  • Food and Supplies: Depending on the shelter's resources, they may provide kibble, a bed, and a leash, or ask the family to cover part of these costs.
  • Duration: This can vary from a few days (emergency care) to several months.

Please note: Being a foster family requires great emotional strength. The hardest part is often seeing the dog leave for its new family, but it is thanks to this bridge that a dog who might not have survived in a shelter can truly thrive.

It is an excellent way to help if you are not ready for a 15-year commitment, but have time and love to give immediately.
